The ceremony and reception venue you choose will go a long way in establishing the mood and feel of your big day. Whether it’s a rustic winery or a beachside venue, choosing just the right setting is crucial.
But if you want to take things a step further there are a multitude of ways in which you can personalise your wedding space to truly reflect the personality of you and your husband- to-be, as well as establish your overall theme.
With this in mind, we’ve put together the five ways you can personalise your venue and ensure your day isn’t just a typical ‘white wedding’ but one your guests will be talking about for years to come.
Wherever possible your wedding décor should tie in with your overall wedding colours. Elements such as centrepieces, flowers, chair coverings or sashes, napkins, cake topper, bomboniere and bunting will all allow you to reflect your chosen hue. The most obvious place to start is with a colour you are particularly drawn to, whether that’s the palest pink or a cheery yellow.
Alternatively, opt for a colour that ties in with the season in which you’re getting married, such as Autumn colours like burnt sienna, bronze and cranberry, or Spring hues such as pistachio, mauve and watermelon pink.
Add some mood lighting
Want to instantly transform the mood of your wedding space? Scatter dozens of candles wherever you can find appropriate spots. Not only is candlelight flattering, it sets a romantic and intimate feel as soon as you light the wicks. You can display candles in tea lights, candelabras, glass hurricane shades and hanging lanterns, and even line your aisle with candles – though watch out for the hem of your dress! You can also drape fairy lights throughout your bunting, and wrapped around centrepieces to set a similar mood and add a touch of whimsy to a simple setting, or hang lights from tree branches if you are having an outdoor wedding.
Give thought to your centrepieces
Your centrepieces will obviously form the focus point of your guest tables;centrepieces may be as simple as cut flowers in slim individual glass bottles in various lengths, or as elaborate as paper doily chandeliers.
Some other cute and novel ideas include teacup centrepieces. Collect cups and saucers from flea markets or online, stack them high and set votive candles in the cups. Seascape centrepieces: use sculptural shells and coral-like pieces; or simply arrange frosted goblets filled with gardenias, calla lilies and Dutch tulips for a clean, fresh, all-white look.
Get creative with decorations
Several wedding seasons ago the rustic theme exploded. Traditionally set in a country or garden backdrop, rustic-style weddings saw creative brides using unique décor touches like mason jars, garlands of wheat, cowbells, glazed pots, mini birdhouses, burlap sack table runners and woven baskets laden with seasonal fruits to personalise their venue.
While the rustic theme is still popular, these days it has evolved into a more polished and sophisticated feel which channels elements of a vintage-style theme. Opt for apothecary jars, floating candle bowls, distressed metal candelabras, centrepiece mirrors, blackboards (where guests can leave messages of congratulations, or you can map out your seating chart so guests know where to sit), and metal or ceramic ornaments.
You can also fill glass vases with fruits and vegetables reflecting your wedding colours. Use bright oranges, lemons and limes, or even mangoes or coconuts.
Also try using natural objects like stones, leaves, pinecones and even twigs to add an organic aesthetic to your décor. Place in rustic containers or scatter amongst candles for added ambiance.
Include some personal touches
Reception signage is usually the first part of your wedding that guests will see, so be sure to greet them with a personalised welcome sign, or use a framed quote that you both love. Framed photographs of you as a couple and perhaps your parents’ wedding photographs on display are a nice personal touch and add to the romance of the occasion. You can go a step further and showcase mementos from your relationship such as trinkets you’ve bought while travelling together, or photos that reflect some of your milestones.
