Why go? Clayoquot Sound, with its crisp mountain air and scenic surrounds is undoubtedly one of the most luxurious “outdoor” honeymoon destinations around.
The waters of Bedwell Sound glisten in the sunlight and the bordering expanse of snow-capped mountains and centuries-old forests are a far cry from the hectic metropolis. The area includes parts of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and some of Strathcona Provincial Park – both popular spots for hiking.
If you opt to stay at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, you’ll be “glamping” (ie. “glamorous camping”), and the four-star rated retreat is proof that the great outdoors and luxury can indeed go hand-in-hand.
Accommodation might take the form of tents, but these are not just any tents – they’re spacious and sit waterfront on raised wooden platforms, furnished with queen-sized beds, cosy duvets, antique dressers and camp stoves. There are wood-fired hot tubs, a day spa on-site and gourmet meals, which of an evening, are served by candlelight and paired with wine by an in-house sommelier.
In this remote wilderness there are no televisions, no internet and the chances of mobile reception are slim. Yet it’s not about deprivation, it’s about simplification and the enhancement of experience. Who needs mod cons when there are bears to observe, river rapids to conquer, horses and mountain bikes to ride and salmon and halibut to catch?
When to visit: May to August.
Must-do: A guided bear watching tour aboard a Zodiac boat should be on your to-do list. Sonora Island, located at the north end of British Columbia’s Destination Sound, is one of the best spots to spy the Black and Grizzly bears in their natural habitat.
