How did you and Nick meet?
I was only 15 and Nick was one of my older brother’s friends. He’d come over to my house a few times, however we’d never had a conversation. Then, one night, out of the blue, I received a message from him and the following night he took me on a date. We spent the summer together and have been together ever since.
How did Nick “pop the question”?
Nick surprised me with a trip to Sydney the week after I had graduated from university.
The morning we left he gave me an itinerary of what was to come over the next couple of days, leaving blank what we would be doing on the Saturday.
On the second day we were there he took me to the harbour and we boarded a boat that took us to Cremorne Point. A woman met us at the dock and greeted us with a picnic hamper with a menu personalised for ‘Nick & Laura’.
We walked along to a perfect picnic spot that looked over Sydney Harbour and he unpacked the bag of goodies. After lunch he told me he had one more surprise for me, and he pulled out a beautiful ring and asked me to be his wife!
Where was your wedding held?
The ceremony and reception were both held at Peppermint Bay. We had an outdoor ceremony with the water as our backdrop on beautiful green grass. The reception was in the Stackings room, which was just perfect. It has wooden features on the back wall and the main wall of the room is all glass window with a large oak tree centred outside and lit up at night.
What was your wedding day like?
I walked down the aisle to an acoustic version of I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers.
Rohan Stubbings was our wonderful celebrant.
It was a seated ceremony and was furnished with an enchanted antique/romantic theme. Our bridal arch was decorated with ivory roses and ivy, as was the antique dresser and stool that was used as our signing table.
Inside, our reception had the same theme carried throughout, with a dessert buffet dressed with roses, ivy and babies breath flowers. The dessert buffet and wedding favours (salted caramel macarons) were all home baked by myself and my two bridesmaids.
The weather was perfect for a wedding, around 20 degrees, cloud cover, no rain and no wind. In the morning it drizzled for about 10 minutes but luckily it passed quickly.
Highlights and hitches during the wedding?
One of the many highlights of the weekend was spending the night before at Villa Howden with my two best friends. Nick and his groomsmen’s also stayed at Henry Jones Art Hotel the night before.
We had a very relaxed morning, enjoying breakfast downstairs, then taking our time getting ready throughout the day.
Everything went smoothly really, the only disappointment was my flowers; they were not at all what I had expected. The touching speeches were another highlight but the greatest moment for me was seeing Nick waiting for me at the end of the aisle with a lovely, yet nervous, smile.
And the honeymoon?
We flew out to Fiji two days after the wedding and spent one week on Musket Cove Island relaxing, then we spent a week on the mainland of Fiji in Denarau.
What advice/tips would you offer other couples?
Try to get all your jobs and things done 2 days before the wedding so that you can take time to relax and enjoy the day/night before the wedding as well as the wedding day without having to worry about doing any last minute jobs. Also, when people offer to help, they really do want to help – so make use of the family and friends that surround you as it makes for a less stressful event!
