Choosing your wedding florist

Floral Designer and Owner of Milkbud Flowers + Styling, Lisa Pockran knows a thing or two about blooms!

On today’s blog, she shares her tips on how to choose your wedding florist.

What are some of the things brides should look for when sourcing a florist?

I am a big believer that it will just feel right when you find them, so shop around.

You should of course check for regular and current social media updates, testimonials from other couples, ask friends and other wedding suppliers for recommendations; but in the end you will get a gut feeling. If the person you are communicating with understands your vision, can add some sound advice without trying to change the plan and you are confident that they are the right choice – book them in!

How can a bride and groom maximise their time spent with their florist?

Preparation is so very helpful. Even if you don’t know what flowers you want you should come with the full picture (colours, venue, dresses etc). Once your florist understands the feel and theming of your wedding they can get some ideas together for you based on that. Providing a budget is also very important. This will keep your florist focused on ideas that can be realistically achieved.

What are some arrangements that you don’t often get requests for but you think look great for a wedding?

I can not get enough of little flower garlands for the bride and grooms chairs and also oversized floral table runners – oh my I wish more people would order these!

Which flowers suit which seasons?

Choose flowers in their natural growing season. Not only will you have the best selection of colours, but like produce they will typically be better quality and price.

I love soft, pastel, ‘garden-picked’ posies in Spring. Summer encourages us to use colour, colour, colour – big, bold and bright. Autumn is my personal favourite for collections of blooms in gorgeous muted tones. You can’t go wrong with green and white shades in Winter, add a touch of willow or bark to bring tie in with the natural surroundings.

What is something unique to your service that you are especially proud of?

Milkbud comes to the Tasmanian wedding market with a fresh approach and a sophisticated flair. We love the details… every single little detail.

What advice would you give to brides and grooms to ensure their wedding day runs more smoothly?

Leave the details to the professionals. It is your time to enjoy the time with your family and be blissfully wed; it’s your supplier’s time to show you why you booked them in the first place.

Any extra tips?

Ask your florist if they offer other services such as styling or hiring of items – this will save you a lot of time running around looking for another supplier. The goal after all is to get to the next item on the list!
