Destination Tasmania

Tasmania’s popularity as a wedding destination grows ever larger, attracting wedding couples with the incredible variety of stunning scenery and environments, and the ease with which you can get around Australia’s island state.

After all, weddings are no longer restricted to being a one-day event at a location that’s simply close to home. Many weddings are a weekend, or even a week-long celebration at a much-loved destination.

Choosing a wedding destination away from home is your chance to put your own personal stamp on your wedding day. If your family and friends are geographically widespread it’s also a terrific opportunity to find a central location that everyone can travel to.

What follows is a short roundup of some of the best wedding destinations in Tasmania… and possibly even the world!

1 Launceston, North + North West Tasmania

If forested green hills, fields of lavender, sheltered beaches, rambling country estates or bountiful vineyards are your thing, then the north and north west of Tasmania provides a plethora of breathtaking wedding backdrops, along with some of the best ceremony and reception venues Tasmania has on offer. Launceston, as Tasmania’s second largest city has one of the best preserved early cityscapes in Australia with superb Victorian and Colonial architecture and century-old parks – a wedding photographer’s paradise.

2 East Coast

Tasmania’s sparkling East Coast is an ideal destination for couples searching for a romantic backdrop to say ‘I do’. From the crisp white sands, azure waters and bobbing fishing boats of St Helens and Bicheno, to the historic charm and water views of Swansea or the pristine beach and bush of Freycinet National Park, the East Coast offers an array of magnificent waterfront options for ceremonies, receptions and accommodation.

3 Central Highlands

Of course if it’s snow-capped mountain peaks, crackling log fires, iconic alpine wilderness and a sumptuous wedding feast you’re after, then you’re sure to be attracted to a magnificent winter wedding at Cradle Mountain or Tarraleah. While Tasmania’s Central Highlands are a very precious place in any season, the area is also the ideal wedding destination for those brides and grooms-to-be who may wish to incorporate trout fishing, world-class walks, unique flora and fauna, kayaking, helicopter tours and golf into their wedding celebrations.

4 Coal Valley + Richmond

One of Tasmania’s most visited tourism destinations, the 19th century Colonial Georgian village of Richmond is also an ideal wedding destination. Approximately 15 minutes drive from Hobart city or the Hobart Airport, the area is picturesque all year round. With a wealth of art galleries, cafés, vineyards and surrounding farmland, the options abound for foodies who want to make local produce and wine a feature of their big day. Richmond also boasts the oldest bridge and the oldest Catholic Church in Australia, and a streetscape that will make you feel as though you have stepped back into the Colonial era.

5 Bruny Island

If you’re in the hunt for a more private and slightly more remote nature-based destination, then Bruny Island may be the perfect place for you. Just a 20-minute ferry ride from the southern Tasmanian seaside hamlet of Kettering, Bruny Island is one of the state’s best-kept secrets. The island is also home to some fantastic produce including oysters, wine, chocolate and cheese. While you will need transport to get around the 50km long island, you can simply drive your car, minibus (or wedding cars) onto the ferry. Bruny Island offers a variety of different accommodation options including houses, cottages and bed and breakfasts.

6 Hobart + Southern Tasmania

A major drawcard for interstate and overseas guests, Hobart’s cosmopolitan waterfront is perfect for those looking for a luxurious wedding destination with all of the trimmings and much more. With a wide range of accommodation options and newly opened/newly refurbished reception venues in Hobart city and the waterfront, Hobart’s parks, docks and historic Salamanca Place draw many in to say ‘I do’.

Southern Tasmania has wedding destinations aplenty. Choose from the lush farmlands and water views of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and Huon Valley, the Tasman National Park with its just opened Three Capes Track (for those couples wanting to fit in a spot of bushwalking with their nuptials), a wedding among the art at MONA, or a wedding under the majestic Poplar trees of the Derwent Valley.

Destination weddings also give you an opportunity to relax with friends and family before or after your wedding, as most of your guests will stay at least one night. If everyone stays at the same place, it can even turn into a week-long holiday together – just choose your guest list with care!
