How to choose your florist: tips from an expert

What are some of the things brides should look for when sourcing a florist?

I would say that I would look for a really varied and abundant display of flowers. Has the shop got the “wow” factor when you come in? As that is what you want on your day. Then of course, look for helpful and passionate staff.  Most great weddings are a product of great teamwork. Most often the best weddings come from brainstorming and working together.

How can a bride and groom maximise their time spent with their florist?

I think the internet is a great tool these days. Brides have amazing options to find pictures online of the types of things they like; if they come along with a few pictures it often gives us a starting point to develop ideas from.

What are some arrangements that you don’t get requested often but you think look great for a wedding?

There has been a real demand for vintage and shabby chic inspired wedding flowers, with a real emphasis on old-fashioned roses. Personally, I really love the boldness and dramatic looks you can get from using big tropical flowers like gingers and pink heliconias.

What tips would you give to brides and grooms to make their wedding day run more smoothly?

Try and get as much done before the day. Wherever possible let family and friends take care of any odd jobs so that you can be free to enjoy the day as much as possible. And don’t sweat the small stuff – relax and enjoy!

How did you get started in the industry?

I approached a couple of florists in Hobart and volunteered to get some work experience. It was a great way to get my foot in the door and to see how the industry works.

What is your most favourite aspect of your job?

At the moment I am enjoying the variety of my job. One day I can be making bouquets or doing a bridal consultation or planning a function with 30 tables, the next day I can be working remotely on Bruny Island uploading wedding pictures to the website or working on social media for the business.

What is something unique to your service that you are especially proud of?

At the moment it is our new eCommerce website http://www.magnoliaflorist.com.au. It has been quite a process and a learning curve but is now live and a very exciting new chapter to the business.
