How to choose your make-up artist: tips from an expert

Shimmer

What are some of the things brides should consider when they’re searching for their make-up artist/beautician?

Firstly, you need to find someone who enjoys their job and wants to be involved in weddings. It is such an honour to be involved in someone’s big day.

You want someone who is going to make you feel relaxed so you can sit in the make-up chair and be calm. Someone who is flexible around the times of the day – hairdresser, photographer, etc but who can also provide advice as to what works when scheduling the morning and getting ready.

I will not leave a bridal party until I know that each lady is happy and comfortable with their make-up.

What are some trends you are seeing when it comes to wedding make-up?

Although the smoky eye/soft lip trend is still in, I’m absolutely loving ‘Old Hollywood Glamour’ and the use of lippies with a hint of colour and boldness.  Brides need to ensure they have a good lip liner and lippy and keep the colour fresh all day and night to get the most out of their entire look. I am always disappointed to see a beautiful bride missing lips!

Most importantly, wedding make-up needs to be customised to the individual person. We come across a lot of ladies who don’t usually wear a lot of make-up, and some who have a set way of doing theirs, so these things need to be taken into account. It is of utmost importance that when you walk down that aisle, you feel amazing in your own skin and that you are not hiding under a mask. When you feel amazing, you are going to look amazing!

How did you get started in the industry?

My love of make-up and the desire to learn more was what made me get into the industry.  Twelve years on I always want to learn more.

I also suffered with acne as a teenager and into my 20s. I knew there was more to this condition than using the often harsh products that were marketed at the time, so I decided to further my education into Beauty Therapy. Now not only can I empathise with acne sufferers, I can help them overcome the condition.

What is your favourite part of your job?

Definitely making people feel pampered and glamorous! For me it’s so important that my clients see an improved version of themselves, not a stranger looking back at them in the mirror. I have made some very special bonds with clients over the years, it’s such a wonderful part of my job to build relationships with clients and make them feel great at the same time.

What is something unique to your service that you are especially proud of?

We are often complimented on our friendly and welcoming atmosphere at Shimmer. This is something that comes naturally to my team and myself, as we all love our jobs and as previously mentioned, we love making people feel great! We always offer competitive, affordable pricing to enable our clients to factor beauty treatments into often strict budgets, especially these days.

What tips would you give to brides to make their wedding day beauty preparation runs smoothly?

Be informed and organised as early as possible. This not only relates to beauty preparation but all facets of the wedding. It is never too early to start getting organised – researching, getting quotes, etc. Let your friends, family and whoever offers help to help. Stress is one of the worst things that can happen to the skin so try your best to eliminate it. We offer complimentary wedding consultations where we can recommend treatment plans, products and advice to help you achieve glowing skin, without breaking the bank. Why not have the best skin of your life on your wedding day? Then you are armed with the knowledge to continue to glow.
