Wedding makeup trends: Expert advice

SarahBanksOwner of Shimmer Health and Beauty Studio, Sarah Banks sat down with Bride Tasmania this week to talk all things beauty.

What are some of the things brides should consider when they’re searching for their make-up artist/beautician?

First and foremost a skilled and experienced make-up artist. There are many great make-up artists in Tassie, I’ve seen quite a few emerge over the past couple of years, and I get excited about and am in awe of what some of these ladies can do!

With technology and social media, you should be able to research your options, including examples of their work.

Choosing someone who is passionate about their job and working with brides is an extra advantage. I get so much joy from spending time with brides on their big day and making them feel glamorous, it is really such a big honour and I get such a buzz from it.

What are some trends you are seeing when it comes to wedding make-up?

I’m seeing two main types of styles lately – one being a very subtle look with an emphasis on lashes, a flawless complexion and often paired with a statement lip.

The other trend I’m noticing is an absolute glamazon look, something straight out of a magazine. Beautiful bold perfect eyes with exquisite liquid liner and lashes, lashes, lashes! Paired with either a statement or nude lip, and a flawless complexion. I personally love this look, but it’s not for everyone – the last thing you want is to be feeling uncomfortable with your appearance on your wedding day.

What’s your favourite bridal beauty look?

My style has changed, as styles do. I have loved the smoky eyes/subtle lip look for years but I’m now also really into brighter lips paired with a dewy complexion, great cheeks (just the right amount of contouring) and liquid liner and lashes to emphasise the eyes.

But I am a huge lover of beautiful eye shadow, which is sometimes too much with brighter lips – not everyone can pull this off. Too many choices!

It really all comes down to which style suits the lady sitting in the make-up chair, what is going to make her look and feel a million bucks!

What is your favourite part about your job?

I just love making people feel great. I am and always have been a sucker for weddings; I am just in my element when chatting to people all things weddings and cannot begin to describe how much I love being there on the day.

I am lucky to have such a wonderful job, I enjoy it every day and continue to meet and work with so many wonderful people.

What is something unique to your service that you are especially proud of?

Being able to offer over 12 years of experience. I have seen so many trends and have grown so much in my profession over that time.  I have also met so many wonderful people, including great wedding service providers here in Tassie that I can recommend to brides.

I am so driven by wanting to make people look and feel great. I often have brides recommended to me who are looking for a more natural look as there are many ladies out there who don’t wear a lot of make-up day-to-day, so they want to feel comfortable with what they see when looking in the mirror for the first time.  That is so important to me.

We have always offered affordable pricing because, let’s face it, weddings can easily cost a small fortune and make-up is only one part of the day.  We want people to be able to indulge for their big day without blowing the bank. This also applies to our in-salon treatments and we offer some great pre-wedding beauty packages – choose from our packages or we can customise one to your individual needs.

What tips would you give to brides to make their wedding day beauty preparation runs smoothly?

Personally, I have loved the Bride Tasmania! I was so excited to be able to use it for planning my own wedding after admiring it for years!  My advice is to get as many things ticked off your list as soon as you can so that your mind is at ease and you are not spending heaps of time thinking and worrying.

Social media offers so much information and with all that our mobile phone offer these days, there is absolutely no end to the amount of researching and simple documenting (taking screen shots and making notes on our phones) that we can do.

Get service providers to email you confirmation if possible and also start paying deposits if you can as early as possible to relieve the pressure close to the wedding.

Even if you are not usually very good at delegating – start practicing! Your bridesmaids, mum and close friends will be itching to help! And you just simply can’t (or shouldn’t) do everything yourself.  If you are planning a surprise wedding or want to keep details to yourselves, ask your wedding service providers for tips.
