What’s your something blue?

‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe,’ are tokens of good luck for the bride to carry on her wedding day. Originating from a Victorian rhyme, these small personal treasures are typically unique to each bride, and are rarely obvious to anyone but those who know and love her.

The ‘something old’ is meant to represent continuity. The ‘something new’ is meant to stand for the future. The ‘something borrowed’ is a metaphoric borrowing of luck from a person that has had a successful marriage. The ‘something blue’ is one of our favourites because it allows each bride to use some imagination. The final piece is a ‘sixpence in your shoe’, which is said to lead to good luck and prosperity for the newly married couple, and potentially a sore foot for the bride!

Blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolise love and fidelity. This old tradition has endless possibilities that fall anywhere from traditional to contemporary. Here are some of our ideas for how to work your ‘something blue’.

1 Blue garter

Wearing a blue garter is a fun way to give a nod to something blue. It also makes for a hidden surprise perfect for the garter toss tradition, or impressing your groom later in the night.

2 Blue shoes

For modern brides that want their something blue to pop on their big day, try pairing your gorgeous wedding gown with a pair of chic royal blue pumps.

3 Blue manicure or pedicure

If you prefer your ‘something blue’ to be a little more subtle, then choose ivory peep toe shoes and paint your toenails with a pastel blue nail colour. It would also work well on fingernails too.

4 Blue bouquet

Your bouquet is the perfect place to add blue, especially if blue is already part of your colour scheme. Either wrap your stems in blue ribbon or tuck a small blue flower into your arrangement.

5 Blue jewellery

A pop of colour in the form of fabulous accessories will make your wedding day look stand out. A blue sapphire necklace or drop earrings is a great way to add a little sparkle and shine to your look. Or better yet, for those lucky enough to have one, wear a sapphire engagement ring.

6 Blue hanky

There is an excellent chance that you will be overwhelmed with emotion on your wedding day and it will likely lead to some happy tears. Have no fear, a blue hanky will save your day. A blue hanky is also a pretty way to carry something blue on your wedding day.
