Promote your business with weddings tasmania
It’s a common dilemma for men who plan to pop the big question. Do you choose the engagement ring before you propose and run the risk that your significant other may not like it, or do you propose without a ring, but rob your proposal of some of its romance? Here are some of the pros and cons.
Engagement rings: Collins Jewellers, Hobart
One reason that a man should have the engagement ring when he proposes is that your bride-to-be will love being able to wear it straight away, and be able to show it off to friends and family. For many people, an engagement won’t seem 100 per cent legit unless she’s got an engagement ring to show for it. It’s also a sign that the groom-to-be has planned the marriage proposal, and he has made a definite decision to spend the rest of his life with his partner.
There are a couple of reasons that a man shouldn’t propose with a ring, and the most obvious is that his girlfriend might not like the design he has chosen. One way around this is to take her best friend or mother shopping with you, or consider having a special day of jewellery store window-shopping, to get an idea of what she likes. Another idea is to study what kind of jewellery your partner wears – is it traditional, fine and delicate or ultra-contemporary?
The second reason that a man shouldn’t propose with a ring is that it may place undue pressure on his partner. If yours has been a long engagement and a marriage proposal is more of a formality, then it’s quite acceptable to produce a ring. However, if yours has been a short relationship, or the proposal comes as a surprise, your partner may need some time to get used to the idea and consider her answer.
In light of these pros and cons, it’s now quite common for a man to buy a relatively inexpensive ring for the marriage proposal and for the happy couple to go shopping for the engagement ring at a later date.
This is a good plan because the temporary ring still adds a romantic feel and shows that the man has given consideration to the engagement, but the bride may only wear this ring for a short time and choose her preferred style later. Perfect!
